5 Thanks: January

I'm truly ashamed. It's been far too long since I've posted a five thanks post....how terribly ungrateful of me. In case you've joined me since my last one, here's my original post where I explained how there's ALWAYS something to be thankful for, even if it's something small, simple, and sweet.

That being said, new year-- new start. And, for the record, I love how these items all fit well into my word for the year.

Without further adieu, here are five of the simple things I was thankful for last month:

1. rekindling my love for reading

After teaching reading all day long, sometimes the last thing I want to do when I get home is read some more. But then I do it, and I'm always so glad I did. I read three books last month, all of which were on my list of books to read this year. I'm guessing that puts me ahead in this game?
Anywho, I've especially enjoyed these...I'll be finishing the second one, Crossed, just as soon as I finish this post.

2. something shiny

Last month, the hubby and I bought a new oven.
Who knew an oven could ever be so shiny?

3. birthdays

Hollyn and I both celebrated birthdays last month, and I'm still smiling over the simplicity and perfection that was Hollyn's second birthday party. And seriously, this little girl is so beautiful in so many ways that it makes my heart swell with pride and adoration. Clearly God does not give us what we deserve when it comes to our children, because there is no way I've done anything worthy of being her mother.

4. this friend

This is my friend, Courtney.
And in the past month or so, her world has been rocked in more ways than one. Yet, after moving and losing her mother within one week's time, she continues to be an amazing example of what it looks like to live and shine for God. She is truly relying on Him to comfort her, bring her peace, and guide her during this difficult time. And I could not be more thankful for the example she has set or the reminder she has been to me that God IS in control, and His plans, though we may not always understand them, are ALWAYS what is best.

5. Prison Break  and Parenthood marathons

Although I did resolve not to watch more than I read this year, I did a lot of watching in January. However, the entertainment that is Prison Break can't be beat.......

And Parenthood has truly challenged me as a wife and a mother.

I'm hoping that cancels out the many hours I've spent making the most of my Netflix subscription.....

And now I have to ask--- what were YOU thankful for last month?
And what are you looking forward to this month?
I happen to L-O-V-E Valentine's Day, specifically in terms of my kiddos, so I can't wait for next week.

Here's hoping your Wednesday is filled to the tip top with things to be thankful for, and be sure to come back tomorrow; there's a giveaway a comin'.

Dear Mr. Sparks, You've Made Me Grumpy

Warning: I will be talking about Nicholas Sparks's newest book, The Best of Me, in this post. However, I don't plan on saying anything that you can't get from reading the inside of the cover. But, if that's too much of a 'spoiler' for you, then you may want to come back to this post after you've read the book. However, if you continue reading this post, you may not want to read the book at all.....

Let's start at the beginning.

This is me in college (I'm the one on the right):

Somewhere close to this time, I began my relationship with ole' Nicholas.
By 'relationship', I mean he wrote and I read....everything. I've read all of his books, even after I started to realize that he essentially takes the same story and retells it over
....and over
....and over again
with some new names and new places, but I was faithful.
 I was loyal.
I was a 'fan' in the truest sense.

Not any more.

In fact, this is me promising to never read another Nicholas Sparks book ever again.

Now that I've said it, let's discuss the why, shall we?

Well, our relationship began to go South, so to speak, when I became a mom. For whatever reason, having a daughter of my own has made me more aware of what I listen to, read, and watch. I don't want certain ideas in my home or in my brain anymore; what once seemed okay to listen to or entertain even if I didn't per say agree with it, is no longer okay.
Being a mom is a HUGE deal and an even bigger responsibility,
and I try hard to live accordingly.
Do I still watch TV or listen to music or reads things other than devotional books?
Of course I do; I live in the same world as everyone else and my house has both the Internet and cable.

BUT, I am more aware of what I expose my children to and fill my head with than I was before the kiddos were part of who I am.

Simply put, what I'm trying to say here is that I don't agree with the way Mr. Sparks's characters often live out this scenario:

They meet.
They talk.
They bond.
They jump in the sack.
All in about a three day time period.

Not okay.

Phase two of our relationship breakdown occurred when I became a high school teacher. Every day I see at least one high school girl reading a Nicholas Sparks book. One of my students was reading one today in my class, as a matter of fact. So, essentially, Mr. Sparks is doing nothing to help the 'please oh please save your most precious gift until your marriage' plight that I'm trying so hard to instill in the sweet kiddos I love. Instead he's filling their precious minds with ideas that lead to confuse 'lust' with 'love'. While I realize he is by no means the only writer out there doing this, the fact that his earlier works did more to reflect Christian principles and morals proves that he CAN write books that serve as good examples of the blessings that can come from Godly versus worldly relationships.
More on this in a minute.....

But that's not all.

The final straw for me came via this:

In this novel, Nicholas Sparks writes about an affair.
The problem does not come from his writing about it, but he romanticizes and glorifies it, making it sound like a holiday from real life and justifying it with the idea that the wife just isn't happy in her marriage.

Okay, first let me say that I'm not here to judge.
At all.

That's in no way my intention.
I realize that affairs have been around as long as marriage,
and unfortunately, they're not going anywhere any time soon.
I also realize that affairs are extremely hurtful and damaging for all involved.

I have several friends who have been on the receiving side of an affair,
and let me just say that there was nothing romantic of holiday-like about it.
We have so many things in this world that are trying to tear families apart;
we don't need any more help in that department or anyone else telling us how 'easy' and 'ok' it is.

However, I have an even bigger problem with the fact that Nicholas Sparks has appealed to the teenage audience with several of his works that feature teenagers and have been turned into movies staring popular teen actors. He even has a new one coming out soon. Having appealed to this audience, he's setting them up to be greatly misinformed. I try every single day to be a positive example for the teens I work with, and even though I sometimes fail miserable, I use every available avenue to be a good example for them. Nicholas Sparks has such a chance to make a difference in their lives. Young girls today are desperately seeking stories of romance, and he certainly delivers. But while he has their attention, couldn't he just as easily use this opportunity to promote them to live their lives in a way that honors marriage?

Even worse, in one of his earliest books A Walk to Remember, Sparks wrote with a heavy Christian influence, often referring to God and having the main character emphasize heavily how she was waiting until marriage. When I started reading his books, this is one of the main things that attracted me to them. It's not often that you find a romantic story that contains good values and sets a good example to young readers. Also, I loved the idea of a Christian man writing sweet love stories. And to this day, I still LOVE this book and the sweet message that it sends to readers of all ages.

If you look on his website, it says he goes to church regularly.

Do I think that there's a Christian alive who hasn't sinned or who doesn't in some way give in or conform to the ways of this world in which we live?
Of course not!

However, would I LOVE to see him step up and use his status to encourage Godly relationships?
 Most certainly.

I am in no way that we should ignore affairs or that he shouldn't write about them;
my frustration comes from the fact that he romanticized it and justified in a way that I simply can't defend. He focuses so heavily on the romance part of the story, while only briefly mentioning the idea that this affair might lead to regret. I just can't believe that this is or should be true to life.....

I'm not thinking that he should become a Christian author, but I would love to see him revert back to writing the kinds of novels that, although they may not even mention God,
 contain morally appropriate 'love stories'.

Is that really too much to ask?
I'm thinking no, it's not at all.

I honestly believed that he was above conforming to what society
has unfortunately deemed as 'popular' and 'acceptable'.

Apparently, I was fooled.

To me, an affair and a love story are generally two different things.
If he's going to have his characters make mistakes, I wish he would also portray the consequences that follow.

You too?

So, in closing:

Dear Mr. Sparks,

We are over.
Our society has enough things telling us that it's okay to do whatever you want if it 'feels right'.
Please stop corrupting the minds of young girls by making affairs sound like anything more than the hurtful acts they truly are.
You can keep your sappy jump in the sack stories and peddle your repeated plots elsewhere.
Families are more important than lusty desires.
My daughters, my friends, my students, and I can do better.

You've proven that it's possible to write a morally upstanding, yet completely romantic, novel. I know you can do it and do it very well, so why would you ever try to fill our minds with anything else?

Praying that you'll step up and be the Christian example that I know you can be,

McCall

And to you my sweet readers who stayed around long enough to finish reading this forever long post,
here's hoping that this post wasn't too much for you today; I know that I usually keeps things light and funny around these here parts.
But, if I don't stand up for I believe in,
how can I possibly expect anyone else to?

What I was LOVING last week and A THANK YOU!

So, this week has not been the best. It won't go down in the history books nor will think back and remember it especially fondly any time soon. In short, hubby had the stomach virus, and I have very little voice left. Boo on both of these things. And please forgive me for taking a wee little blogging break. I'd planned on posting this Friday, and then Friday became Monday. How did that happen?!?

However, I am still thankful. Here are five things that have made last week top notch:

1.  This Girl

That's my Casey, and she just recently completed her first half marathon. Caseybaby, you are my hero.
Conversations with my Casey can't be beat. Slumber party plans are in the works. Who's excited? That would be me.

2. This Book

I'd lent it to a student, and she's just finished it. I plan on starting it tonight, if not sooner....

3. This Surprise from the Hubby

The other day I was having a terrible, awful, no good dirty rotten day. I'm sure you know the kind. And the hubby came home with this. He knows that 80's movies and quirky surprises are my love language.

4. This Pretty Lady

Last Friday my mom celebrated a birthday. Happy birthday again to the woman who not only birthed me but has put up with me every day since. Sometimes I think that alone is worth celebrating. LOVE YOU, MOM and can't wait to celebrate with you when we go to see The Vow later this month. It will be epic; I can feel it.

And now for a thank you.

I recently participated in a gift exchange through this blog.
Basically, I was paired with another blogger, got to know her a bit, and then sent a happy her way.

Well, let's just say that I won the blog match lottery when I was paired with Lou who blogs here.

Isn't she precious?

Funny story:

So, we get paired up, we email, and I begin to browse through her blog.
The more I read, the more I was hit in the face with how alike we are!
Seriously, it's pretty cray cray how much we have in common.
The best part?
She noticed it too.
Don't believe me?
Well, check her blog out and see for yourself.

Or, check her blog out anyway. It's WONDERFUL and filled with lots of fun recipes, funny stories, laugh out loud pictures, and two super cute kiddos.
It's quickly become one of my favorites.

Anyway, I was so excited when I received this in the mail last week:

Love, love, love this, and I couldn't have hand-picked a more ME happy!
She was also so sweet to send goodies for the girls....which the have cleverly hidden so that I cannot photo them, little stinkers. But, let's just say she fed Hollyn's Minnie Mouse addiction, and Hollyn is forever grateful.

Have any of you read this devotion?
I'm so excited about it!

Want to see what I sent Lou? You can read the post she wrote about it here.

Now I must be off.... my five minutes of me time have expired, and this two are beckoning.

But, be sure to come back tomorrow....I'll be ranting about Nicholas Sparks, whom I happen to be quite grumpy with at the moment. And later this weekend, another giveaway from one of my sponsors is headed your way. Excited? That makes two of us.

This week I'm trying something new and linking here. You?

This Used to Be a Diaper Box.....

See this pretty new storage I've added to my kitchen?

In its former life, it was a diaper box from Target.

Here's how I took it from trash to treasure:

-I cut off the four flaps on the top.

-I painted the Target diaper box so that the bright yellow wouldn't show through the burlap. I used grey, but any neutral color would have worked.

-I hot glued the burlap to the box.

-I added the bells and whistles (aka ribbon and felt flowers).

And they lived happily ever after.

The End

Today I finished Nicholas Sparks's newest book....not sure how I feel about it. Am the only one who has ever felt this way about a book? I'm thinking surely not....

And am the only one indulging in The Bachelor this season?
Poor, poor Courtney. Monday night's episode made me want to the change the channel.
You too? Good, let's be friends.

What should I read next? Ideas?

Here's hoping your Wednesdayy is wonderful and free from trashy television and books that leave you with a bad taste in your mouth.

Today I'm sharing this project here, here, here, and here.

Sleepover Success: A How-To and a WINNER

So, this weekend Libby had her first spend the night party. To be honest, I've been avoiding this for a while. Selfishly, this is partly because I spend all day with other people's kiddos, and on the weekend I really just want to love on my own kiddos for a while. This is also partly because Libby is only seven, and she has so many more years to enjoy the epicness that is the sleepover; I didn't see the need to rush it.
However, I took the great plunge Friday night in what has to have been the world's best first sleepover experience. Here are some things I learned:

1. HAVE A PLAN

Expecting that you'll just put two kiddos together and that they will play happily for hours is not always the best approach. I don't know about your kiddo, but Libby wanted her sleepover to be greater than great, and just playing all night wasn't going to cut it. Think about a playdate-- fun for a few hours and then starts to fizzle, right? Well, why should we expect this to be any different? So, I suggest you have a plan. If the kiddos want to play, great, but have something in mind to do in case things turn sour or get boring. For us, this something was Dolphin Tale. Have you seen it? Confession: I wasn't looking forward to it for two reasons:
1.) I'm not just a huge fan of dolphins. I don't DISLIKE them, I am just more interested in other animals. 2.) It seemed to have lots of potential to be cheesy. I can handle a little cheesy, but I'm not much on OVERLY cheesy. Well, if you need me, I'll be busy eating my words. This movie was top-notch. We liked it so much, in fact, that we rewatched it yesterday. It has a great cast, great music, a great message, and is something the whole family can enjoy together. I highly recommend you check it out. The girls sat quietly and watched the whole thing.

2. PREPARE YOUR KID

While Libby has had a little sister for the past two years, she also spent five years as an only child....and sometimes it shows. She likes to be in the spotlight and isn't always super excited about sharing. If this sounds anything like the kid you love, I suggest preparing him or her prior to the sleepover. We talked about how she was our guest, how she may have different rules than we do, and how she may not like everything we like. We also talked about what we'd do if she got homesick at bedtime. While I can't prove it, I do believe that giving Libby a heads up and talking through what may happen helped avoid a minor meltdown on her part and helped her to be a better friend Friday night.

3. CHOOSE CAREFULLY

I think this is the key to having a successful first sleepover, so listen closely: carefully choose who you will invite. Not everyone parents the same way, not all families share the same values, and not all kids play well together. Period. So, getting your feet wet in the sleepover department with someone whose parents you know well is essential. I can't stress enough how much I respect the little girl's parents, and I know that their parenting style and priorities as parents are very similar to ours. Not to mention, there daughter was a DREAM! She was so polite and funny; I truly enjoyed being around her. Will there come a time when Libby wants to invite over someone I barely know whose parents I also don't know? I can pretty much count on it. But, by starting here with someone we know, we set the standard for how we treat guests and how we behave at a sleepover while staying in our comfort zone. One challenge at a time....I'm thinking that might need to be on my parenting motto list.

And before you go, I have a winner to announce:

CONGRATS, Edi!

And if you didn't win, chin up, pretty.
I have three more giveaways headed your way really soon from some awesome new sponsors.
And the fact that someone likes this little blog o'mine enough to want to sponsor it, is proof that someone other than my mom reads it. (Hi, Mom. Happy almost birthday.)
So, if you're reading, which you clearly are, you make my day. Every day.

Here's hoping your Monday was filled with the good stuff.
Ours was filled with the stomach virus. Yes, that makes round three at our house.
Yuck, yuck, double yuck.

A Giveaway for You, Because You're AWE-SOME

First, let's start with a little trip down memory lane, shall we?

Bloggers, feast your eyes on baby Libby.

I love how she was so darn snuggly and oh, those ginormous cheeks!

And, here's one of my favorite pictures of us together,
which happened to be taken on my twenty-sixth birthday.

I love this picture of us because it kinda looks like we were telling secrets.

*Fast forward to the present, and say adios to Memory Lane.*

Now, take at look at sweet Libby today........

...as she laughs hysterically while trying to literally tape her little sister's mouth shut.
Nice, Lib. Really nice.

But, one thing (of the many) that I LOVE about Libby-- the girl has great taste.

And here's lately, she's loving this:

It's a devotional book, and to be honest I'm not sure who loves it the most at our house.

Let's explore this book a little further, mkay?

Here's Libby with her copy that she got for Christmas.

(Note to moms everywhere: if you need your kid to smile for a picture, trying asking her to say 'alligator underpants'. Cracks her up, every.single.time.)

I love this book for so many reasons,
one being that Libby loves it now and can still love it when she's sixteen.
By that I mean, it's one of those books that grows with you; what it means to you today will change over time, so you can reread it and discover something new with each revisit.

I also love how there are 365 entries, one for each day of the year.

AND, please notice the 'read on your own' part at the end of each page-- LOVE THIS! I love Libby being led to scripture and encouraged to explore her Bible on her own.

In case you haven't picked up on it, there might be just a wee bit of book envy going on here; I may or may not secretly wish this were my copy. I'll never tell.

And, one more reason to love it:

This book may just possibly buy you some silence. Oh, the joy that is a silent moment at my house.

And yes, in case you were wondering, my daughter is preparing to sleep in her dance recital costume from three years ago. Don't go there. It's called picking my battles.

SOOOOOO......you guessed it!
Because I love this book so much and because I love my readers so much AND to celebrate reaching 200,000 views and 300 followers (I'm at 299 right now, but I have faith that it'll happen soon), I am giving away one copy of this book to one of YOU!

Here's how you can enter to win:

1. Follow my blog. It's easy-- just look at the sidebar to the right and scroll down until you see a box with lots of faces and a follow button. Click the button. YOU CAN DO IT! :) Leave a comment telling me that you follow AND include one of the following:
a.) Your favorite television series, current or of days gone by.
b.) The name of one book I need to read this year.

2. Tweet, facebook, or blog about this giveaway. Leave a comment for each of these things that you do.

Libby will draw a winner on Sunday, and I'll announce first thing on Monday.

AND, if your kiddos are little or if you don't even have kiddos are are a kiddo at heart but think you'd enjoy this book, PLEASE enter! You don't have to have kids to win or to read God's word. :)

Here's hoping your Thursday is awe-to-the-some.

The commenting may now commence.

Oh, and I'm joining my favorite blogger today as she works to encourage us to get out from behind the camera and get in the pictures with our kiddos. You should check it out. All the cool kids are doin' it.

Setting the Record Straight

So, you know how sometimes it helps to picture the writer while you read?
I'm thinking this may be one of those times.
So, here's me...looking hopeful and thankful, right?
Let's hope so.

Moving on......

Hey there.
Today I've got something on my mind......bare with for a minute while I talk statistics.
I do have a point, I promise.

Did you know that this little blog of mine is growing like a weed?
Because it is.
If you do recall, I was so excited in November when I met my 100,000 view mark.
Well, guess what?
Last week I reached the 200,000 view mark. I may not be good at math, but this I can handle.
That's approximately 50,000 views each month.
Holy canoli. That's a whole lot of views.
People must really like cake batter dip, which had just under 60,000 views in the past two months.
That's right folks, 60,000.

Now here's the part where I can make my point:

PLEASE HEAR THIS PART:

I am very, very thankful that 60,000 people took an interest in what I had to say about dip that tastes like cake. Really, really I am.

HERE'S THE HOWEVER YOU WERE NO DOUBT EXPECTING:

Why does this kind of hurt my feelings?
I think this kind of makes me sad because I'm not trying to write a recipe blog. While I do sometimes POST recipes, that's not my goal here.

That leads me to ask myself, what exactly IS my goal here? Why do I blog? What is about blogging that keeps me coming back for more and makes me look forward to it every day?

There are several reasons.
So, I made a list (in case you didn't know, lists are kinda my thing):

1. I love the idea that something I say will encourage or impact or motivate one of you. I especially love the idea of something that I saw as a negative part of my life or a bad day affecting one of you in a way that something good comes out of it. This idea makes me very, very happy.

2. I love sharing (what I hope are) good ideas. I think our best tool as mothers, as women, and as friends is each other. And every once in a blue moon, I have an idea that I think you may like too. So I share. And you usually like. And this too puts a smile on my face.

3. I love to write. I love to record. And I don't do scrapbooks. This IS my scrapbook. This is the place where I record the major and completely forgettable moments of my life and my family's life because I don't WANT to forget them. If for nothing else, blogging is a great way to keep up with what I was doing last week, last month, or last year. It's the place where I can see how much I've grown, how I handled things, and how I viewed whatever it may be. I am a firm believer in the notion that we tend to sugarcoat our pasts sometimes. And I'm not all that into sugarcoating. I want the truth, and so I blog. I blog mostly for me, but I love that you enjoy it as well.

4. And I think it's safe to say that this is the most important reason: I blog because I like you. I LOVE the ways my blog has connected me with old friends and helped me meet new ones. I love that through blogging I have learned so much about other people and the things we have in common. I love that blogging inspires me to be a better mom and to get up and DO something new. I love the fact that blogging forces me to put my opinions and thoughts out there for all to see. It's sometimes scary, and there are times I've dreaded the response I would receive. But you, my friends, are always there, waiting with your helpful, kind, thoughtful comments. To sum it up, who has the best readers ever? Ummmm, that would be me, thanks.

MY POINT:

I suppose that if I want people to head my way for something over than yummy treats, I need to post things are clever, creative, well-written, thought-provoking, relateable, real, and honest.
That's a big request, but I'll take that challenge.

And if you made the cake batter dip, two cool points are headed your way.

Here's hoping your Wednesday was t-totally awesome. Ours was filled with another attack from the stomach visit. This time Hollyn was the one that fell prey to its evil devices. Oh, stomach virus...we are so not friends.

Tomorrow I'll be linking this post here, so if you found my blog via Casey, welcome. Hope you liked what you saw and enjoyed what you read. :)
